The Biggest Mistake I See People Make When They Walk Their Dog
It's this 👇
They don't connect with their dog. At all.
I don't mean you have to spend the entire time entertaining them. But a little bit of connection here and there makes such a difference. This isn't about just throwing a ball and seeing that as proper engagement (you're a very tiny element of that picture for your dog). It's about doing stuff with them. Actively engaging together in some kind of way. Mag and I regularly do outdoor agility (or proprioception for you word buffs).
I rarely see a parent take their kids for a walk without engaging with them at all or having some kind of plan of what they'll do together when out...making dens in the woods, playing poo sticks or on the swings, even just chatting to them about what they can see. Whatever it is, there's usually some form of interaction and engagement going on from both sides.
It's time we did more of this with our dogs! Spend 2 minutes training their latest trick. Jump logs together. Explore a new path together. Whatever it is, it'll make a big difference.
